Although 400 years separate patient from doctor, much in Leonardo's life (as revealed in his notebooks) is 'couch material.' His admitted disdain for sexual intercourse, his obsession with flight, his alleged homosexuality, his fascination with guns and weapons of war, his inability to complete his greatest masterpieces...all this provides ample grist for Freud's own creative mill. And although Freud's conclusions have been rejected in horror by many Leonardo scholars, his psychoanalytical study of daVinci provides a fascinating portrait of the artist and, by extension, of the analyst. The drawings in this volume, among them "Memorial to the Duke of Sforza for the Use of His Widow," and "Device for Inducing and Maintaining Erection," are undoubtedly those which Freud wished to discover among Leonardo's "abstinent" manuscripts. They are, in fact, the work of Dr. Mark Podwal, a young New York artist whose drawings have appeared in the pages of the New York Times, Rolling Stone, and Der Spiegel, and on the walls of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at the Louvre, Paris, the Amon Carter Museum in Texas, the Jewish Museum in NYC, and other museums around the world. He was recently honored with a retrospective exhibition at the Magnes Museum in California.
