    Freud’s da Vinci.

    $200.00

    Year: 1975.

    Size: 30 x 45 inches

On the occasion of a 1983 exhibition of Prechtl's work in New York, a writer deliciously described this watercolor used to promote a satiric book: ". . . avuncular Leonardo da Vinci doesn't seem to notice Dr. Sigmund Freud, even though the curious old analyst is almost hugging him . . . so he can expose what's hidden in the painter's flowing beard: . . . a naked, pouting Mona Lisa wearing a metal collar and handcuffs, linked with a metal compass whose points touch her breasts." Below Prechtl's witty, free-association image is a fake Freud quote and laudatory praise from various irreverent voices of the day. The book itself was written by Mark PodwalÐthen a recent medical school graduate, now one of America's leading dermatologists. It pokes fun, through satiric pen-and-ink drawings, at Freud's interpretation of great art.

Getting it All Together / McGovern

    $100.00

    Year: 1972.

    Size: 25 x 38 in inches

In the 1960s and '70s, designer Paul Bacon teamed up with photographer Paul Weller and Alix Nelson to create a dozen or so posters dealing with environmental themes. This political poster made for George McGovern's unsuccessful presidential run against Republican candidate Richard Nixon was not a commission, but something that the three wanted to do, and they published it privately to help the campaign. The image is a fabric construction showing the American flag in the process of being assembled out of canvas-strips of red and white, a blue rectangle and white stars. The ornate script in the center instantaneously evokes the U. S. Constitution while it reinforces McGovern's image as a post-Vietnam healer. After starting his career designing jazz album covers, Bacon has gone on to become one of the most widely recognized book-jacket designers in the country.

    Give Your City a Heart!

    $50.00

    Year: 1978.

    Size: 30 x 45 inches

This poster depicting a giant red heart adorning the top of One Times Square-the geographic center of New York City-epitomizes the spirit of "I Love New York" born during the festive, fervent mayorship of John V. Lindsay. Lurker's ultimate hope was to paint his valentine to the city as a mural on the tower's white marble facade. He published this poster as an "in-progress documentary" showing how the work would look at several steps along the way. The poster was sold in city bookstores and souvenir shops, much to the puzzlement of natives and the disappointment of tourists who couldn't find the real deal. Lurker was born in Ulm, Germany, and received his education in Stuttgart, Hamburg and the University of Kansas. Since 1968, he has worked in New York as a sculptor and designer of kinetic works. His reputation has won him commissions from many museums throughout the world including New York's Museum of Modern Art, and his giant play-sculptures were featured prominently on the site of the 1972 Olympics in Munich.

    Year: 1979.

    Size: 22 x 34 inches

Israeli-born Farin painted a series of about ten images for Art d'Lugoff's Village Gate, the crowded, smoky Greenwich Village haven to jazz musicians and aficionados alike. The same year that he created a design for Dizzy Gillespie appearing at the downtown jazz den, the appearance of jazz flautist Herbie Mann at the Village Gate put Farin in a mystical mood. He places the musician against a backdrop of earth and sky and inspires him with the light of a guiding star -- an image both warm and serene that evokes Mann's playing perfectly.
